E-Learning Software

Learning Management System is a Browser Based learning Management System. It allows students to create and admin course through a browser. He can

  1. Refer to documents in any format (Word, PDF, HTML, Video...)
  2. Admin public or private discussion forums
  3. Manage a list of links

 

Many teachers become familiar with Learning Management System in two or three hours without any dedicated technical training. Even reading this manual may prove superfluous. In this way, you can concentrate on the most important for a teacher: content and a good educational scenario, but you remain autonomous and don't need a technical team to manage your course.

 

Groups
This tool allows you to create and manage workgroups.

 

You can create groups of students. A group is a collection of students sharing the same forum and/or the same documents upload area.


Users

You can add students one by one in your course. Don't forget that if they are already registered in the system, this will give them 2 logins. So it might prove more practical to decide between self-registration by students or central administrative registration, then avoid systematically any registration by the teacher. This is due to the fact that the teacher only controls his course, and the student can be inscribed at several courses.

 

Create a teacher

The teacher is either created by the Administrator, or a user self registers as teacher.
Self-registering as a teacher is often disabled. See Admin manual for this.

 

A teacher can create a new course without being added to a specific course beforehand. He will then only have access to his self-created course.

 

For adding a new teacher to a course you have to select a course before changing the profile to teacher.

 

Self registering and creating a course website. Depending on your institution security choices, you are allowed to self-register as a professor or you are not allowed and should receive your registration settings from your institution administration.

 

Administering a course
The course main page contains all the features visible to the students, but there are more options available, and two additional sections to this screen.

Backup, restore and delete
The teachers can make backup of the courses they have access to. Immediately after the backup procedure it will be possible to download the backup to the teacher’s local machine. This is a nice security, but it is also an easy manner to copy a course from one machine to another.

 

The teacher can do the development on his local machine and when ready make a backup of this local course. However, the normal teacher cannot restore a course, he has to ask the Admin to import the backup to the production environment.

 

Only the administrator and privileged teachers that have admin rights can create a course from a backup.

 

Render a course invisible
Learning Management System has many possibilities for rendering files inaccessible by the eye. However, this function does not exist for courses. Courses can indirectly be made inaccessible, by removing all students inscribed to the course. Naturally course settings must be set to not accept self-inscription. See the user section in this manual for more details.

 

Description of course
The course description tool will help you describe your course in a synthetic way and from the outside. It may help your future students get a clear view on what they can expect from this course. It is also an opportunity for you to rethink your course scenario.
Items are given here as proposals. If you want to create a course description with your own items,

 

Use only the 'Other' item and decide for its title.

 

Documents
This section provides a comprehensive mechanism for organizing files that you would like to make available to the students. The Documents tool is similar to the File Manager of your desktop computer. It is possible to make many directories, and to have directories within directories to enable grouping of files.

 

You can create simple web pages ('Create a document') or upload files of any type (HTML, Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Acrobat, Flash, QuickTime, etc.).Your only concern must be that your users have the corresponding software to read them. Some file types can contain viruses, it is your responsibility not to upload virus contaminated files, unless your portal admin has installed a server side anti=virus software. It is, anyway, a worthwhile precaution to heck documents with antivirus software before uploading them.
The documents are presented in alphabetical order.

 

Tip: If you want to present them in a different order, numerate them:01,02,03...Or use the Learning Path to present a sophisticated Table of Contents. Note that once your documents are uploaded, you may decide to hide the documents area and show only one page on Home page (Add link on home page orange tool) or a Learning Path containing some documents from your Documents area.

 

Forums
The forum is a written and asynchronous discussion tool. Where email allows one-to-one dialogue, forums allow public or semi-public (group) dialogue. Technically speaking, the users need only their browser to use Learning Management System forums.

Assignments
Depending on your course scenario, you have to decide if you want that all students see all documents (if, for instance you want to ask them give their opinion on each other's papers) or if you want that you are the only one to see the documents (if, for instance, you ask the same question to everybody and want to avoid heating).

This tool has an Introduction text area to allow you write a question or detail guidelines or remind of a deadline or whatever you may find relevant.

 

Exam
The students will be allowed to attend the test after finishing their learning. The mechanism will allow them to register in the exam and select the answer from the options available and submit their answers.

Announcements
The Announcements tool allows you to send an email to all students and teacher respectively to inform about the test result.

 

Login /logout
Every time you go back to the Internet campus of your institution, you will need to enter username and password.
