ABOUT KAILASH MANSAROVAR
It is indeed a rare opportunity and privilege for all of those devotees who have been dreaming to be close to the home of Lord Shiva in this world. Amidst snow-clad mountains at the rooftop of the world where, it is said that if you stand on your toes you can touch the sky, is located one of the holiest natural shrine for Hindus, Buddhists, Jains and indigenous Tibetan Bons - The Kailash Mansarovar. Mount Kailash is situated in the south-Western part of Tibet bordering the Kumaon hills and Nepal and lapping at its foothills is the turquoise blue, calm water of Lake Manasarovar. Kailashkhand, as the region is known for the source of four largest rivers in Asia, the Indus flowing to the North, the Brahmaputra to the East, the Karnali - one of the main tributaries of the Ganges to the South, and the Sutlej to the West. For the Hindus Mount Kailash is the earthly manifestation of Mt. Meru, their spritual centre of the universe, described as a fanatastic 'world pillar' 84,000 miles high, around which all else revolves, its roots in the lowest hell and its summit kissing the heavens. On the top lives their most revered God, Shiva, and his consort Parvati.
The followers of Bon in Tibet worship the mountain as spiritual center of the ancient country of Shang-shung. They believe that this is the place where their founder Shenrab descended to earth from the sky. Because of the religious associations, many Hindu and Buddhist ascetics, hermits and pilgrims have been drawn to the area of mountain for the past two thousand years or more to see it, circumambulate it and to practice austerities and meditation. This is where in the eleventh century; the Tibetan Buddhist Saint Milarepa defeated his Bon opponent Naro Bon-chung in a famous contest of magical powers. Mila is associated with the valley on the eastern side, where he lived for eleven years. Padmasambhava is also associated with the mountain, particularly the valley on the Western side, where he stayed in a cave.
